The
MPI NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER, along with
over twenty other hospitality organizations in the area, will
be hosting the third annual “Hospitality Hoot: A Grand
Night for Meeting,” scheduled for February 2, 2005 at
the San Francisco Design Center. The event will begin at 4:00
p.m. with an education session, followed at 5:30 p.m. by hors
d’oeuvres and desserts, provided by over twenty of the
Bay Area’s top caterers. Representing over 7,500 industry
members, some of the other national Northern California chapters
include: Society of Incentive & Travel Executives, Society
of Association Executives, National Associationof Catering
Executives, National Speakers Association, Bay Area Business
Travel Association, Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association
International, International Association of Exposition Managers,
International Special Event Society, Professional Convention
Managers Association, Silicon Valley Business Travel Association,
Professional Convention Management Association, Society of
Government Meeting Professionals and several convention and

Certified
Meeting Professional program is for individuals who are currently
employed in meeting management and want to pursue continuing
education, increased industry involvement and industry-wide
recognition by achieving the CMP designation. The requirements
for certification are based on professional experience and
an academic examination. The Convention Industry Council recently
announced the official launch of the CMP Ambassador program.
Under the direction of Beate Ewing, CMP, CMM, Manager, Meeting
Services for IntraMed Educational Group and Joanne Joham,
Project Director for CIC, the Ambassadors will promote the
professional benefits and raise the level of awareness regarding
the certification program throughout the world. A European
CMP testing location will be offered in Frankfurt, Germany
during IMEX on April 18, 2005. CMP Ambassadors will mentor
candidates through the application process, making candidates
aware of study materials and study groups, and providing encouragement
and guidance. Applicants must submit completed applications
to CIC by January 17, 2005 to be considered for the April
2005 exam. The next North American (United States and Canada)
exam process begins on March 7, 2005 with the exam taking

has launched PlanetChase OnCall. The Austin-based meeting
management company, provides high-level meeting management
and consulting services for the global markets ranging from

meetings with an emphasis on delivering superior, personal

KATHLEEN
TITUS
has been appointed the Northeast Senior Sales Manager for
the Hilton New Orleans Riverside which recently completed
$37.6 million worth of renovations and are finalizing additional
plans for the coming year. Ms. Titus has over 15 years of
hospitality experience and most recently served as Director
of Sales and Marketing for FLIK International’s Conference
Center Division in New Jersey. She has also held numerous
positions with Wyndham Hotels, Starwood Hotel and Resorts
and Best Western International. She attended the University
of Pennsylvania and Tulane University where she received a
Bachelors of Science degree, a Hotel Restaurant Management
degree and multiple certificates. She will work out of the
Hilton New Orleans Riverside satellite office in New York/Philadelphia
Metropolitan area.   |
KATHLEEN
RATCLIFFE
will become the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing
for the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors
Bureau as of November 1. Ratcliffe has been directing the
Jacksonville Convention & Visitors Bureau since July 1997
and from 1996-1997 served as president of Meeting Professionals
International (MPI). She was later was honored as International
Supplier of the Year in 1999. Ratcliffe also served as Vice
President of Sales and Marketing for the Baltimore Area Convention
and Visitors Association. In addition she has held numerous
industry volunteer positions and has served on the board of
directors for the following organizations: International Association
of Convention and Visitors Bureaus from 1999-2002, the Florida
Commission on Tourism and Visit Florida since July 2000.

MANOJ
KANWAL
has been appointed as General Manager of the Danat Resort
Jebel Dhanna, the new five-star resort opening this autumn
on the west coast of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
Formerly General Manager at National Corporation for Tourism
& Hotels Mafraq Hotel, Kanwal has been with the corporation
for six years, prior to which he spent several years with
the Rotana group in the United Arab Emirates, involved in
various departments including food and beverage and marketing.
Indian born, Kanwal trained at the Hyatt Regency in Delhi
and began his career at the Maury Sheraton in the capital.
He has a diploma from the Institute of Hotel Management in
Delhi, and an MBA from Bradford University in the United Kingdom,
as well as completing the General Manager’s Program
at the Hotel School at Cornell University. |
SEAN
MADDOCK
has been appointed General Manager of the historic Arizona
Biltmore Resort & Spa. Maddock, who most recently served
as Vice President & General Manager of the KSL Resorts-managed
Claremont Resort in Berkeley, California, brings extensive
hospitality experience, including three years at Shangri La
Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand, Manila and Hong Kong,
where he held the position of Hotel Manager. Maddock launched
his hotel career with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, where he spent
nine years, mostly in Hawaii, in various management positions.
Familiar with Arizona, he served as Director of Rooms with
the Boulders Resort in Carefree and had a stint at the Westin
Century Plaza Hotel & Spa. He holds a Bachelor of Arts,
Hotel and Restaurant Administration degree from Washington
State University and is classically trained as a chef saucier
with 10 years of culinary experience in upscale independent
restaurants and hotels in the Pacific West and Alaska.

JON
PECK
has been selected by White Lodging Services as the General
Manager of the new 617-room Louisville Marriott Downtown which
is scheduled to open April 2005. As an award-winning eighteen-year
veteran of Marriott International, Peck has been involved
with five hotel openings, two conversions and was the recipient
of the Marriott General Manager Leadership Award which he
received in his most recent position as General Manager of
the Marriott Frenchman's Reef and Morningstar Beach Resorts
in Saint Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Prior to that,
he was the General Manager at the Costa Rica Marriott in San
Jose when the hotel was awarded the prestigious Alice Marriott
Award. Other positions include: Area Director of Sales and
Marketing for Central America, Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia;
Opening Director of Marketing for the Costa Rica Marriott
and the Los Suenos Marriott and Resort (which was selected
most Successful Hotel Opening in 2000); Director of Incentive
Marketing, Marriott National Accounts; and Director of Corporate
Sales at the San Antonio Rivercenter Marriott. He started
his career in 1986 as a sales manager at the Atlanta Marriott
Downtown. Prior to joining Marriott, he worked with independent
restaurants and hotels in a variety of operational positions.  |
FADI
TOUMA
has been appointed General Manager of the Ocean Point Resort
and Spa, located a few miles north of South Beach in Sunny
Isles Beach Florida. Previously been named Manager of the
Year by Boykin Management Company, he recently held the position
of General Manager at the Radisson Hotel located in Mount
Laurel, New Jersey. Mr. Touma is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace
College in Ohio and holds a Degree in Business Administration.     |

NAMES |
The
former Hotel Princess Kyoto was renamed and opened as HOTEL
NIKKO PRINCESS KYOTO on October 1. The hotel, which
is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, has been undergoing
a large-scale renovation that includes the lobby, restaurants
and all of the 216-guest rooms. In addition to a new French
restaurant, a spa and shops. The hotel also features Japanese
and Chinese restaurants and a cafe, and has meeting facilities
for up to 280 and seven breakout rooms.  |

SPACES |
The
$100 million RENAISSANCE LAS VEGAS HOTEL
is the largest non-gaming hotel in Nevada and is opening three
months ahead of schedule on December 3rd. Located next to
the convention center, the 548-room luxury property has thirty
suites and more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space with
14 distinctive breakout rooms. The 9,850 square foot Grand
Ballroom has a 19-foot ceilings, while the Junior Ballroom
is just the right size for team building activities. All meeting
rooms feature Wi-Fi technology.   |

RENOVATIONS |
The
SADDLEBROOK RESORT just outside of Tampa,
Florida has just completed a $8.5 million redecoration of
all 800 guestrooms. Each room was custom designed in a tropical
theme reflecting the resort's atmosphere. New furniture, beds
and soft goods compliment the recently completed $6.5 million
renovation to all of the bathrooms that included classic beige
and green marble throughout. The kitchens in each suite also
received new cabinets, lighting and granite countertops. Prior
to the latest renovation, the roofs in the Walking Village
were re-done, the swimming pools were re-surfaced and new
furniture purchased along with a new golf cart fleet.

BONAVENTURE
RESORT & SPA,
located in Weston, Fl is transforming the resort into 252
luxury residences through a $75 million renovation, complete
with the addition of a 48,000-square-foot Golden Door spa
-- Wyndham's largest spa and the first Golden Door on the
East Coast. The new project will be redeveloped over a period
of 18 months, with renovations currently underway and expected
completion by spring 2006. Plans call for the existing 496
hotel rooms to be converted into 252 two-bedroom condominium
units. The residences are available for individual sale and
occupancy by unit owners who will have the opportunity to
become part of Wyndham's rental program, through the brand's
extensive distribution systems.    |
SANDESTIN
GOLF AND BEACH RESORT
is located in Northwest Florida, between Pensacola and Panama
City, eight miles east of Destin, on 7.5 miles of beach and
bayfront property featuring 1,350 accommodations and 65,000
square feet of meeting space. The resort ended its summer
high season with record-breaking bookings. Within 24 hours
after Hurricane Ivan made landfall, the resort was operational.
On schedule with the multi-phase, $400 million master redevelopment
plan, the year ahead brings continued resort enhancements
from new accommodations totaling 509 rooms, new retail shops
and a new restaurant and dining services.   |
